Popular MYTHS About Your Hair

Your hair defines you. It shapes your identity and boosts your confidence. But don’t believe everything you hear about hair care…

Myth #1

Myth: “Not cutting your hair makes it grow faster.” OR “Your hair will grow faster if you cut it more.”

Truth: This is definitely one of the most popular hair myths. Cutting your hair doesn’t affect its growth, but it does make it look a ton healthier. Hair growth starts from the root and not at the ends, so focusing on the health of your scalp is most important. There is good reason that hair care and salon experts say to trim your hair every six to eight weeks. Split ends make your hair look thinner and it causes more breakage. So, when you cut your hair it looks fuller, thicker and healthier.

Myth #2

Myth: “Coloring your hair will damage it beyond repair!”

Truth: While it's true that a coloring process, like bleaching, can cause some damage, modern hair coloring products are gentler on your hair than they once were. Choosing a knowledgeable stylist who uses high-quality hair color products and following proper aftercare can minimize potential damage and maintain your hair's health. A quality service will result in healthier hair over the long-term.

Myth #3

Myth: “Dirty hair grabs hair color better.”

Truth: Let’s kill the myth that dirty hair is better. Fresh hair will color better with more even results, better gray coverage and increased longevity. What does it mean to have dirty hair? Dirty hair means your hair hasn’t been properly cleansed for three or more days, or it has too much product buildup throughout. Both of these issues can affect how well your color service turns out. Cleansing your hair the night before or the day of your appointment will set you up for the best coloring outcome!

Myth #4

Myth: “My shampoo stopped working.”

Truth: This myth stems from the idea that your hair will “get used to” a product and it will stop working. But there’s little evidence to support that. If your shampoo stops giving you the results you want, the condition and needs of your hair have most likely changed. Lifestyle, environmental, or seasonal changes can all impact your hair…the water you use (hard vs. soft), styling products, nutrition, age, illness, hormonal changes, physical activity levels, etc. Even changing seasons can alter how a shampoo works for you. Summer tends to bring more humidity and more time outdoors while winter can cause hair to dry out or feel “staticky”. Any and all of these effects can give you different results with the same shampoo. Unless the formulation changes, a shampoo will do the same thing it has always done.

Myth #5

Myth: “Plucking one gray hair causes two to grow in its place!”

Truth: The fear of plucking a gray hair and having two grow in its place is a widely believed myth. The truth is that plucking a single gray hair has no impact on the growth of new ones! Gray hair is caused by a decrease in pigment production in the hair follicles and is primarily influenced by genetics and aging. However, excessive plucking can damage the hair follicle, leading to potential hair loss. It’s best to embrace your grays gracefully or opt for professional coloring methods if you prefer a different look.
